Did you know... Do you know how the holes you see in coquina rock got
there? Slabs of coquina rock like you see on the cover are in the water now. But thousands and perhaps millions of years ago they were "dry land" with trees growing out of them. As the
trees growing out of them. As the river eroded away the shoreline, chunks of the rock fell into the river and the remains of the trees rotted away leaving holes behind.Do you know
why the rarely smells along Rockledge Drive? Because the natural formations of coquina rock along Rockledge's deep water shore line act more of less as natural sea walls. And rather than drift
around in shallow water pockets or wash up on a sandy shoreline, the decaying sea life that cause the odors wash up against the rock and fall to the river bottom and thus the sun does not penetrate the
material causing the "rotting smell" evident elsewhere. What kinds of wildlife might be observed along the River's edge these days? Of course, a full variety of fish, birds, manatees,
porpoise, etc. Also raccoons, possums, otters and alligators. |
