Rockledge and its schools lie within the domain of the Brevard County School Board, and the Brevard County School Board must be doing something right! The county ranks first
in Florida in the number of adults who have completed high school. Our students generally score higher than both the Florida and the National averages on their college board exams. And we come in 3rd in the number
of high school graduates who go on to college. Our elementary schools can do some bragging also. They seem to score at or above the National average on Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills and above the state
average on Florida's Student Assessment Test. In fact, twelve Brevard Elementary Schools have had classes score in the top 5% of all elementary schools in Florida. All the public schools in Rockledge have been
accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Hans Christian Andersen Elementary School for grades K-5 operates on the "open classroom" concept. It is well-managed and
staffed and like all Rockledge schools is a source of community pride.
Golfview Elementary School is operated on a more conventional classroom concept and is also an exceptionally well-staffed
school for students grades K-6.
St. Mary's Catholic School is a private institution for grades K-8 and student performance reflects that they are well-skilled also.
Kennedy
Middle School reaches grades 7-8 and is staffed by a highly praised group of veteran administrators and teachers.
Poinsett Middle School for grades 6-8 has been highly improved over recent years and
continually shows great strides in the education of its students by a well-qualified staff.
Rockledge High School often referred to as one of the city's greatest assets, is one of the smallest high
schools in the county but obviously one of the best! Strong management, strict discipline and an effective staff combine to make Rockledge High School a most outstanding institution. While a recent survey of students
revealed 49% of them feel discipline at the school is too strict, 48% felt such discipline was Satisfactory and 96% indicated that generally their courses were interesting! There is literally half a book in print
listing last year's annual student awards, scholarships, civic awards, academic awards, vocational awards, etc.
Brevard County also offers excellent higher education opportunities. At the nearby
Brevard Community College main campus students can earn a two-year University-Parallel degree in any of 31 majors, transferring later to a four year University to complete their studies. Or students can earn two-year
degree in preparation for employment in over 35 fields. And the colleges 23 certificate programs offer students one and two year vocational training.
At nearby University of Central Florida, a state
run University, there are degree programs in 8 majors (soon to be 13 undergraduate and 6 graduate programs).
Florida Institute of Technology is also an excellent private college nearby. It has
gained a reputation for high quality scientific and engineering education offering associate, bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in 68 programs.
Additionally, other private colleges offer
graduate studies in business and education nearby such as the Stetson University Brevard Graduate Center and also the Rollins College Branch.
The aforementioned are just brief glimpses of the
reasons why we feel Rockledge residents have educational opportunities second to no one.
